Gertrude is Hamlet's mother who, shortly after the death of her first husband the King marries his brother Claudius who then becomes King. To represent this transition through costume, the Gertrude dress is a combination of both a black mourning costume and a white wedding dress which is transformed on the runway by the model in under 10 seconds completely unassisted.
